Riot Games has officially adjusted its controversial policy regarding League of Legends replay downloads. Following significant backlash from professional teams and content creators, the developer announced in the 26.21 patch notes that players will now be permitted to download up to 10 replays per hour.
The initial proposal, announced on October 8, aimed to restrict replay access to only a player's own matches starting with version 26.20. This move was intended to bolster information security but would have effectively blocked third-party applications and websites from accessing replay data.
Critics argued that the original plan would severely damage the game's ecosystem. Professional coaches rely on these replays to analyze tactics and jungle routes, while content creators depend on them for educational videos. Many players also view high-level replays as a primary method for skill improvement.
Riot Games stated that the new hourly limit is designed to curb malicious actors using AI to scrape thousands of replays. By implementing this time-based restriction, the company aims to prevent abuse while ensuring that creators and players retain access to this essential functionality.
