The iconic game developer BioWare is officially shutting down after more than three decades of operation. This closure follows significant layoffs implemented by Electronic Arts, the company that has owned the studio since 2007.
Founded in 1995, the studio became renowned for creating influential franchises including Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age. These titles defined a generation of role-playing games for millions of players.
The decision is part of a broader internal restructuring effort at Electronic Arts, which is currently consolidating units and adjusting business strategies. Approximately 400 positions, representing 3% of the total workforce, are impacted by these organizational changes.
As a direct consequence of the studio's closure, development on the upcoming Mass Effect project has been terminated. BioWare leadership stated that their current priority is supporting the affected staff members during this transition period.
