Electronic Arts announced on October 22 that it will close BioWare, the legendary studio behind franchises like Baldur's Gate and Mass Effect. As part of this decision, EA has officially canceled the development of the upcoming Mass Effect title. EA stated that this difficult choice was made to focus resources on core competencies amid a rapidly changing gaming market.

BioWare’s legacy includes titles such as Neverwinter Nights and Dragon Age. However, recent projects faced significant criticism, including the 2017 release Mass Effect: Andromeda, the failed title Anthem, and the 2024 release Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which was noted for failing to meet player expectations.

Industry figures expressed shock at the closure. CD Projekt Red CEO Michał Nowakowski stated that BioWare played a crucial role in his company's history, providing engine know-how and support for The Witcher. He described the loss of such a legendary brand as a deeply saddening event for the industry.

Beyond the studio closure, EA is implementing a broader restructuring plan. Reports indicate approximately 400 employees, or 3% of the total workforce, will be laid off. EA is shifting its focus toward specific projects, such as the Sims-related Project Evergreen, while canceling others like Project Lotus and reducing the team size for Skate.
