On October 21, Electronic Arts announced a major restructuring that includes the closure of the legendary studio BioWare. This decision also results in the immediate cancellation of the next Mass Effect game, which had been in early development by a small team at the Edmonton workspace.

EA executives Cam Weber and David Tinson stated that the company is focusing on larger opportunities, leading to the difficult decision to shutter the studio. BioWare officially acknowledged the closure on social media, thanking players for their support over the past three decades of storytelling.

The announcement triggered widespread despair among fans, many of whom expressed anger on social media regarding the loss of the franchise. Some users urged EA to sell its intellectual properties to other companies to prevent the legacies of Mass Effect and Dragon Age from ending abruptly.

Industry figures also mourned the news. CD Projekt Red’s Michal Nowakowski and Paweł Sasko highlighted BioWare’s historical influence on game development, while Remedy’s Thomas Puha noted the industry's growing difficulty in justifying risks on original AAA titles. Additionally, EA's recent $55 billion acquisition by a private investor group has been linked to efforts to reduce operating costs through AI integration.
