Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio is developing Stranger Than Heaven, an action-adventure title spanning five decades and five Japanese cities. The game follows the life of protagonist Makoto Daito, offering a narrative that the studio describes as a serious historical drama rather than a pulpy action experience.
Director Mikinobu Abe explained that the team is moving away from the trademark humor found in the Yakuza and Like a Dragon series. Unlike those contemporary settings, which allowed for diverse comedic substories and minigames, this project focuses on the rawness and immediacy of historical eras.
The developers noted that the social norms and values of the past are inherently striking. By depicting these historical realities, the team aims to provide a surprising experience for players without relying on deliberate, off-the-wall comedy to generate entertainment.
Polygon's preview suggests the game feels harsher and more grounded than previous studio entries. While the reviewer expressed some sadness regarding the potential absence of quirky side content, they remain excited for the release on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X on Jan. 15, 2027.
