Key information
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s upcoming project, Stranger Than Heaven, spans five cities and half a century. During a recent preview, the game showcased detailed environments, including the Edo-period town of Kokura. While the studio’s historical world-building is praised for its evolution across eras, the narrative tone remains a point of uncertainty for some players.
The game introduces a more realistic, visceral two-handed combat system that deviates from the arcade-style action of the Yakuza series. Players can utilize an upgradable arsenal of weapons that persist across time periods. However, the reviewer noted that the controls, specifically using shoulder buttons for combat and analog sticks for dashing, felt unintuitive and occasionally frustrating compared to previous titles.
The reviewer expressed concerns regarding the game's storytelling, particularly the potential use of the "fridging" trope involving the character Tae. While the environments are described as spectacular, the narrative depicts a harsh world filled with discrimination and slurs directed at the protagonist, Makoto. The reviewer questioned whether the game would incorporate the signature humor found in the Yakuza series, noting that the preview felt largely serious.
Stranger Than Heaven is scheduled for release on January 15, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. To assist with the challenging combat, director Minoku Abe confirmed the inclusion of an optional suit that allows players to absorb more damage.
