Key information
RGG Studio’s upcoming title, Stranger Than Heaven, follows Makoto Daito across decades of history, beginning in 1915 San Francisco. The narrative explores themes of discrimination and identity, focusing on a mixed-ethnicity protagonist navigating a changing world. Director Mikinobu Abe notes the game intentionally incorporates anachronisms, such as Snoop Dogg’s character teaching cigarette crafting for stat boosts.
Combat has been re-tuned following earlier feedback. While the system can feel sluggish or messy in crowds, the reviewer found the directional parry mechanics engaging once mastered. Players must time guards and attacks based on enemy animations. Weapon selection, such as nimble knives versus heavy hammers, significantly impacts mobility and combat effectiveness.
The game features robust side activities, including the Showbiz management mode. This allows players to act as club managers, overseeing musicians and stage production while engaging in rhythm-based gameplay. Other minigames include beigoma, mahjong, and shooting galleries. The reviewer praised the cinematic quality and actor performances, noting that the intimate storytelling remains a series strength.
Despite some reservations regarding questionable creative choices like the use of Tupac’s likeness, the reviewer is now optimistic about the project. Stranger Than Heaven is scheduled for release on January 15, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
