Xbox CEO Asha Sharma is reportedly developing a significant restructuring of the Xbox Game Pass service. According to a Fortune report, this strategy aims to transition the platform into a more flexible system, moving beyond previous adjustments such as the removal of new Call of Duty titles from the membership.
The proposed changes involve shifting toward a tiered structure that could allow users to select features à la carte. Potential options under consideration include individual access to cloud gaming, multiplayer functionality, and specific add-ons for console-exclusive titles. This aligns with earlier reports from April regarding a customizable subscription model.
While Sharma has characterized the original Game Pass model as a bet that failed to pay off, the potential shift has drawn criticism. Observers suggest that new charges for cloud-gaming time could result in a service that is both more expensive and less desirable for current subscribers.
Beyond service modifications, the Fortune report indicates broader business resets. These include planned layoffs totaling over 3,000 positions through January 2027, alongside intentions to release a new handheld device in 2027 and a console in 2028, with the latter potentially costing up to $1,800.
