Gavin Goslin, a former Treyarch level designer who contributed to the first two Black Ops titles, has publicly criticized Activision and Microsoft. He argues that original developers are being overlooked despite the ongoing commercial success of these games on PlayStation.
Goslin advocates for a royalty system to compensate the original creators for the revenue generated by these digital re-releases. According to Alinea Analytics, Activision reportedly earned 435 million dollars during the launch month by selling over 11 million digital copies.
The developer expressed frustration that these titles, sold for 40 euros without new features, remain among the top 10 most played games in the United States. He described the situation as bittersweet, noting that executives receive bonuses while the original team receives no financial benefit from the continued longevity of their work.
Reflecting on his experience, Goslin highlighted the exhausting hours spent developing the games. He asserts that if executives profit from these classics in 2026, that wealth should be shared retroactively with the developers who created the code.
