Valve has initiated a beta test for Steam Achievement Sets, a new feature designed to help players track their progress more effectively. This system allows developers to organize achievements into specific groups, which can include temporary sets for seasonal content or special events.
Players will continue to earn achievements through gameplay, but these will now appear in developer-defined groups featuring individual progress bars. Completing a group grants a trophy on the user profile. Crucially, if developers add new achievements later, the original completion status remains preserved, addressing long-standing frustrations where new DLC content would render a previously completed list incomplete.
According to Video Games Chronicle, 17 titles currently support this feature, including Portal 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, DREDGE, and Against the Storm. Developers can create new sets as games evolve, helping returning players identify fresh challenges without losing their previous status.
Developers may also archive achievements or entire sets, ensuring that unobtainable goals do not prevent players from achieving 100% completion. Valve suggests archiving content that is no longer accessible, such as multiplayer modes if servers are shut down, allowing for a clearer distinction between different game modes.
