Sega and Creative Assembly have officially removed Total War: Shogun 2 – Complete Edition from Steam. The publisher has opted to reinstate the original 2011 version of the game following a wave of negative feedback from the player community.

The decision follows widespread reports of technical performance issues and a controversial new user interface. Furthermore, players identified significant visual distortions in the game's artwork, including characters with extra fingers and faces appearing to merge with helmets, leading to widespread speculation that the assets were generated using artificial intelligence.

While Sega is currently investigating these concerns alongside their development partner, the company has not confirmed the use of AI in the creation of the assets. Prior to its removal, the Complete Edition was priced at 40 dollars, with a 10 dollar upgrade option available for existing owners. At the time of reporting, over 81% of Steam reviews advised others to avoid the release.

The original 2011 title is now available for purchase again. This incident has drawn increased scrutiny toward Sega's broader approach to generative AI, particularly as the company has previously utilized the technology for background elements in other projects like Crazy Taxi: World Tour.
