Valve has initiated a beta test for Steam Achievement Sets, a new feature allowing developers to organize achievements into distinct groups. This system aims to improve how players track progress toward specific goals, such as seasonal events or holiday content, by providing individual progress bars for each set.
The update introduces a mechanism where completing a group rewards players with a profile trophy. Crucially, if developers add new achievements to a set later, the original completion status remains preserved. This change directly addresses long-standing frustrations for completionists whose 100% game records were previously invalidated by new DLC additions.
According to Video Games Chronicle, 17 titles have already implemented these sets, including Portal 2, Left 4 Dead 2, and DREDGE. Developers can continuously create new sets as games expand, helping returning players identify new challenges while keeping their historical progress intact.
Furthermore, developers can now archive achievements or entire sets that are no longer obtainable, such as those tied to closed multiplayer servers. Archived content will not appear on user profiles or hinder overall completion progress, allowing for a cleaner separation between single-player and multiplayer objectives.
