Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno has expressed a strong commitment to maintaining physical retail releases for the studio's games for as long as possible. This stance comes amid industry reports suggesting that PlayStation may cease the production of physical discs by 2028.
While Babieno acknowledges that digital distribution is more cost-effective and profitable for the developer, he emphasizes the emotional connection that physical collections foster between players and creators. This sentiment is shared by Tymon Smektala, executive director of the studio's publishing subsidiary, Broken Mirror Games, who notes that collecting games was a fundamental part of his upbringing.
The discussion regarding physical media also involves the upcoming horror title Onyx: The Dark Grip, which is being developed by Bloober Team and published by Broken Mirror Games. The game is planned as a third-party exclusive for the Switch 2, specifically designed for the console's handheld mode, sparking further debate about the value of physical formats for the platform.
Despite these intentions, Babieno clarifies that this is a personal preference rather than a guarantee for every future release. The feasibility of providing physical cartridges or discs remains subject to practical production limitations, even as the company continues to recognize the clear business advantages offered by the digital marketplace.
