Key information

Electronic Arts has officially closed the studio BioWare, ending over three decades of operations. The closure, confirmed by the studio on October 21, 2026, includes the cancellation of the next Mass Effect project, which had been in early development since its 2020 announcement.

The decision follows a major corporate restructuring after EA was taken private in an August 2026 acquisition valued at 55 billion dollars. This deal left the company with 18 billion dollars in debt and annual interest costs of approximately 1.8 billion dollars, prompting a mandate to find 700 million dollars in annual savings.

According to Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, the restructuring involves cutting roughly 400 positions across EA, representing 3% of the workforce, with about 50 of those roles located at BioWare. Executives David Tinson and Cam Weber stated that the company will now prioritize investments in sports titles, Apex Legends, Battlefield, and specific licensed action-adventure projects.

BioWare, founded in 1995 and acquired by EA in 2007, previously underwent downsizing last year following the release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. While that title received mostly positive reviews, it reportedly failed to meet EA's internal sales expectations. No information has been provided regarding the future support for existing titles like The Veilguard or Star Wars: The Old Republic.
