Sega and developer Creative Assembly have officially withdrawn Total War: Shogun 2 – Complete Edition from sale. The publisher decided to revert to the original 2011 version of the game on Steam following significant community backlash regarding the new release.

The Complete Edition, which launched on October 13, faced intense criticism for technical issues including performance problems and persistent legacy bugs. Players also reported a clunky user interface and visual distortions, such as character portraits featuring extra fingers or faces appearing to melt into helmets, which users suspected were results of AI-upscaling.

While Sega has not confirmed the use of AI in the assets, the company is currently investigating the reported issues with its development partner. Prior to its removal, the title was priced at 40 dollars, with a 10 dollar upgrade option for existing owners. According to GameSpot, over 81% of Steam reviewers advised against purchasing the edition before it was pulled.

This incident has prompted further scrutiny regarding Sega's utilization of generative AI in its software. The publisher previously faced reports concerning the use of AI for background assets in the upcoming title Crazy Taxi: World Tour, though Creative Assembly continues to support other series entries like Total War: Warhammer III.
