Valve has launched a beta period for Steam Achievement Sets, a new feature designed to help developers organize achievements into distinct groups. This system aims to simplify progress tracking for players by allowing achievements to be categorized for seasonal events or specific game updates.
Players earn achievements through standard gameplay, but these are now displayed within developer-created groups featuring individual progress bars. Completing a full group rewards the player with a profile trophy. Crucially, if developers add new achievements later, the previous completion status remains preserved, preventing the common frustration where DLC updates make a finished game appear incomplete.
According to Video Games Chronicle, 17 titles have already implemented these sets, including Portal 2, Left 4 Dead 2, and Team Fortress 2. Developers can also archive specific achievements or entire groups. Archived sets will not appear on player profiles if missed and do not hinder progress toward reaching 100% completion.
Valve suggests that achievements which are no longer obtainable should be archived. This functionality also allows developers to separate single-player and multiplayer goals, potentially enabling players to reach 100% completion even if online servers are shut down in the future.
