Patrick Mills, the loremaster at CD Projekt Red, has officially clarified the timeline for the second season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Contrary to fan speculation suggesting the series takes place before the events of Cyberpunk 2077, Mills confirmed on Bluesky that the new season is set in 2078, shortly after the player meets Hanako at Embers.
The narrative progression is reflected in the world state, as the Arasaka corporation no longer wields the same level of influence it held during the original game. Mills noted that time continues to move forward within the Cyberpunk universe, effectively debunking theories that the show serves as a prequel.
While fans are debating whether this placement confirms specific canonical endings for Cyberpunk 2077, the studio has not committed to a single outcome. The situation is compared to the approach taken by Bethesda regarding the Fallout television series, where the show exists within the established lore without forcing a definitive choice on game-specific endings.
To coincide with the release, Cyberpunk 2077 will receive a surprise update on October 22. This patch introduces new cyberware customization options and a dual-wielding combat style. Further expansions to the franchise, including a live-action film and the development of Cyberpunk 2, remain in progress.
