BioWare is officially ceasing operations after more than 30 years of history, marking the end of a studio that shaped the RPG genre. Alongside this closure, the development of the next Mass Effect title has been cancelled, as confirmed by the studio in a farewell message to its community.
The decision follows mass layoffs at Electronic Arts, which resulted in the loss of 400 jobs across the company, including approximately 50 positions at BioWare. Executives Cam Weber and David Tinson stated that the industry is undergoing rapid changes, forcing the publisher to make difficult choices regarding its project portfolio to focus on core growth areas.
Moving forward, EA plans to prioritize its sports titles, Apex Legends, and action-adventure franchises like Star Wars Jedi and the upcoming Marvel Iron Man game. While the company intends to invest heavily in its global communities, it explicitly noted a shift toward fewer simultaneous large-scale projects to ensure resources are concentrated on its primary strategic opportunities.
BioWare expressed gratitude to the players who engaged with their iconic franchises, including Baldur's Gate, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect. The studio stated that its current focus is on supporting its talented team members during this transition period as they conclude their long-standing legacy in the gaming industry.
