Electronic Arts has officially announced the closure of BioWare, a studio renowned for its role-playing games. This decision, confirmed on October 21, 2026, marks the end of the developer's 31-year history following its 2007 acquisition by EA.

The restructuring involves the elimination of approximately 400 jobs, representing 3% of EA's total workforce. According to Bloomberg, about 50 of these positions were based at BioWare, while the remaining cuts affect other teams across the company.

BioWare confirmed that the new Mass Effect title, which was in the early stages of development, has been cancelled. The studio expressed gratitude to fans for their support over three decades, acknowledging their legacy with titles like Baldur’s Gate and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

This shift follows EA's $55 billion acquisition by an investment group led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. EA is now prioritizing franchises such as EA Sports, Apex Legends, and Battlefield. While the future of the Mass Effect and Dragon Age intellectual properties remains uncertain, EA has not clarified if other teams will continue these series.
