Rockstar Games is set to launch GTA 6 this November, featuring a central Bonnie and Clyde-style dynamic between protagonists Jason and Lucia. The game includes intimate interactions, such as holding hands, kissing, and going on dates, with the relationship's progression influenced by player choices like text responses.
Players can choose how much they engage with these mechanics. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson noted that while players act as stewards of the pair's bond, the level of romantic involvement is optional. The characters will remain supportive of each other regardless of whether the player actively pursues a deeper romance.
A YouGov poll of 4,000 British adults revealed that 6% consider virtual dating to be cheating, while 19% expressed discomfort with the practice. Women were more likely to view these interactions negatively than men. This polling has triggered backlash from players who argue that video game characters are not real.
The discourse extends to social media, where some individuals have labeled the game's depth as equivalent to real-life infidelity. Despite these concerns, Rockstar continues its marketing efforts, recently featuring modified vehicles in Miami ahead of the upcoming release.
