Recent industry leaks suggest the upcoming PlayStation 6 could face significant pricing challenges. Insider Kepler_L2, noted for previous accuracy regarding AMD chip architecture, claims that the cost of RAM and flash storage alone exceeds 680 dollars. These figures represent a sharp increase from earlier estimates, with the total bill of materials reportedly climbing from 760 dollars in early 2026 to 960 dollars by summer.
The rising costs are largely attributed to the global demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure, which monopolizes the supply of DRAM and NAND flash components. To achieve high-performance targets like 4K resolution at 120 FPS, Sony reportedly requires massive amounts of GDDR7 memory. This creates a dilemma between limiting technical specifications or accepting a high final retail price.
Sony Interactive Entertainment executive Hideaki Nishino has indicated that the company does not intend to sell hardware at significant losses. Consequently, analysts speculate the console could be priced above 1,000 euros, positioning it as a luxury product. To mitigate losses, Sony is reportedly shifting toward a digital-only model to capture full software margins.
A high launch price could restrict the console's install base, potentially causing third-party publishers to delay next-gen exclusives. This market uncertainty might force Sony to postpone the release beyond late 2027, hoping for semiconductor market stabilization to lower production costs.
