Former Capcom employee Miguel Corti suggests that Resident Evil Code Veronica significantly influenced the franchise's future trajectory. Despite its status as a cult classic, Corti argues the title played a negative role in the series' evolution.
Corti identifies Code Veronica as the initial departure from the series' roots, noting a shift toward increased action and diverse locations. He highlights the game's opening sequence, which lacked horror elements, as a primary example of this transition.
According to Corti, the development team attempted to pack as much content and narrative as possible onto a Dreamcast disc. He asserts that this design philosophy created a direct lineage leading to the action-heavy focus of Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6.
While fans often favor Resident Evil 2, Corti recalls that many internal Capcom staff viewed Code Veronica as the benchmark for the series. He maintains that without this specific entry, the subsequent direction of the franchise would have differed.
