Following a viral social media post in August regarding an unreleased simulator, multiple games centered on finding needles in haystacks have appeared on Steam. Among these, the developers of Needle In A Haystack, released September 29th, have accused the creators of A Game About Needle In A Haystack, released October 16th, of direct code theft.
Jahvin, a developer for Needle In A Haystack, claims that 13 classes from their project were found within the files of the competing title. These files allegedly match the free demo released on September 20th and 21st. The accusations specify that the copied code includes identical function names, matching logic for digging into hay, and even original error messages that reference non-existent shaders.
While the accused studio, Little Field Studios, discloses the use of generative AI for their game's logo, there is no definitive confirmation regarding how the code was obtained. The developers of Needle In A Haystack have filed a copyright notice with Valve and preserved their findings as evidence of the alleged infringement.
This incident highlights growing industry concerns regarding the potential for AI-assisted decompilation to facilitate game replication. Other developers, such as the team behind Drunken Goddess Reflux, have recently restricted access to demos to prevent their content from being quickly imitated or replicated by third parties using similar technological tools.
