Key information
During protests against the rising cost of living on October 17, a Micromania video game store employee in Nice was assaulted while attempting to prevent the looting of his workplace. The incident, which occurred on Avenue Jean-Médecin, gained significant attention after viral footage showed the worker being kicked from behind and struck with stones by individuals attempting to enter the damaged shop.
The employee, identified as Pierre, stated in an interview with the French station Ici that his actions were instinctive. While acknowledging that he perhaps should not have confronted the looters, he maintained that his response was a natural reaction to the situation. He also expressed gratitude for the public support he received and noted that the violent actors represented only a minority of the protesters.
Despite the employee's efforts to protect the entrance, the store was ultimately looted. According to the French Federation of Commerce and Distribution, approximately 1500 commercial establishments were impacted by the unrest, with potential damages estimated to reach several hundred million euros.
French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the violence and looting, stating that those responsible must face justice. He announced that authorities may prohibit certain gatherings to safeguard public buildings and businesses, while distinguishing between peaceful demonstrators and those engaging in vandalism.
