Lucasfilm Games has shifted its strategy regarding the Star Wars franchise, moving away from exclusive publishing deals to embrace a more open approach. Douglas Reilly, a key figure at the company, confirmed that they are now actively seeking pitches from a wider variety of developers and publishers to foster creative diversity.
This strategic pivot follows criticism that previous exclusive agreements, such as the one held by EA, restricted the volume and genre variety of Star Wars games. By diversifying its partners, the company aims to increase the frequency of releases and explore new gameplay styles, as evidenced by the recent success of independent titles like Zero Company and Galactic Racer.
While the company is more flexible, Reilly emphasized that quality remains a priority. Lucasfilm Games maintains a high standard for its licensed products, typically favoring experienced teams over newcomers to ensure excellent player experiences. However, developers do not need to be among the top-five publishers to secure a partnership.
Looking ahead, the studio plans to explore projects of varying scales with unexpected partners. Current known projects include the third entry in Respawn's Jedi series, Quantic Dream's Star Wars Eclipse, Casey Hudson's Fate of the Old Republic, and the ongoing Knights of the Old Republic Remake by Saber Interactive.
