Dean Hall, the creator of DayZ, has publicly criticized the current state of the gaming industry, describing it as "rotten" and expressing concerns that artificial intelligence is accelerating its decline. To counter reliance on major engines like Unity and Unreal, Hall and his team at RocketWerkz have released Brutal, a free, open-source framework designed to provide developers with greater technological independence.
Unlike traditional engines, Brutal functions as a collection of tools and code that allows developers to build their own engines or develop games directly. While RocketWerkz has been developing the framework since 2022, it officially launched on October 15. The system is intended for studios seeking more control over their technology, though Hall cautions that it may not be suitable for every team, particularly smaller ones.
Ludeon Studios is currently utilizing Brutal to create Waylith, a custom engine for their title RimWorld. According to the studio, internal testing indicates that this migration allows the game to run between two and four times faster without changing its visual style or core gameplay mechanics.
Beyond RimWorld, the framework is being used by RocketWerkz for Kitten Space Agency and by Kerbal Space Program creator Felipe Falanghe for his upcoming project. Hall remains wary of future industry trends, fearing that companies might implement more restrictive licensing or subscription models as AI becomes more prevalent in development.
