Bloober Team, the developer behind the Silent Hill 2 remake, intends to continue producing physical versions of its titles for as long as possible. CEO Piotr Babieno emphasized that the studio values physical media and collectibles, viewing them as essential for maintaining emotional connections with players.
Babieno acknowledged that digital distribution is more cost-effective and profitable for the industry. However, he argued that physical media provides a tactile experience that digital formats cannot replicate. This philosophy extends to the studio's future projects, including the 2.5D horror game Onyx: The Dark Group, which is being developed by the subsidiary Broken Mirror Games.
Tymon Smektala, executive director at Broken Mirror, echoed these sentiments, noting that he and Babieno share a personal passion for collecting games. Smektala stated that he intends to support physical releases as long as industry decision-makers allow the format to persist.
The Silent Hill 2 remake launched on PC and PlayStation 5 in 2024 with physical support. While the studio aims to maintain this practice, the future of physical media faces challenges, such as Sony's reported plan to end disc support for PlayStation in 2028. The status of the upcoming Silent Hill 1 remake remains uncertain regarding its physical availability before that transition.
