Google researchers recently reported that four Gemini 4 Argon AI agents autonomously defeated the Ender Dragon in Minecraft. This achievement, which took over 27 hours, is considered a world first for end-to-end autonomous completion without human intervention or pre-scouted seeds.

The agents utilized the open-source Mineflayer library to control players and coordinate via in-game chat and shared memory. Without assigned roles or pre-written game logic, the bots independently planned, executed, and debugged 2,783 programs to navigate the game's complex progression requirements.

Performance was notably inefficient compared to human players, as the agents died 605 times and exchanged 229 messages during the process. While they reached The End in 13.5 hours, the remaining time was spent struggling against the final boss. The run consumed 1.35 billion input tokens, costing approximately $1,620.

Researchers conducted this experiment to study multi-agent coordination and long-term goal pursuit. By observing how these systems manage failure and teamwork, the team aims to better understand how autonomous agents might eventually perform reliable tasks alongside humans in real-world settings.
