Resident Evil 7, which launched in January 2017, was designed to revitalize the series by moving in the opposite direction of its predecessor. Former Capcom narrative producer Miguel Corti revealed that early development plans originally aimed to emulate The Last of Us, featuring Leon as the protagonist.
The project underwent significant changes following a company reorganization that mandated a complete restart under a new director and team. During this period, numerous iterations were discarded, and influences shifted toward first-person shooters like Destiny and Call of Duty, though the director ultimately prioritized a return to survival horror.
Creative references included the 2013 film Evil Dead, which inspired the character name Mia. Corti noted that while some elements were added simply because they seemed cool, such as a choice mechanic inspired by a Dragon Quest game on Nintendo DS, the narrative structure mirrored The Last of Us by focusing on a protagonist searching for a lost loved one.
Late in the development cycle, the team grew concerned about the game's connection to the broader franchise. To address this, they integrated references to the Umbrella Corporation and Chris Redfield to ensure continuity with previous entries in the series.
