Key information
On October 1, developer Mike Klubnika released Volume.art, a free browser-based collection of minigames centered around the concept of volume adjustment. The project, which was organized by the creator of Buckshot Roulette, features 29 distinct minigames submitted by 23 different developers. Development began in June and concluded by the end of August.
Each minigame replaces a standard volume slider with an intentionally complex or inconvenient interface. Players must manipulate these unique mechanics to reach a target volume indicated by a crown icon. For example, in A man named Bow, players adjust the angle and strength of an arrow shot to match the target, while CTRL+ALT+DATE requires navigating a romance-themed dialogue tree to influence a robot character's emotional state.
Other entries include capital gains, which forces players to engage in stock market trading to fluctuate volume, and Cursed Cups, a shell game against a monster. The project draws inspiration from the r/badUIbattles community, which has long explored the concept of intentionally creating poor user interfaces. Klubnika noted that this project was a long-held idea he was pleased to finally release for free.
Volume.art is currently available to play directly in a web browser or via download for Windows and Linux systems. Additionally, a soundtrack composed by IODINE is available for free on Bandcamp.
