Takashi Mochibe, developer of the upcoming strategy RPG Dragon's Chronicles ~Twin Stars of Reginleif~, recently reported receiving an extortion email. The sender threatened to release an AI-generated clone of his game on Steam unless he provided $200 worth of Steam items within 24 hours.
The extortionist claimed to have already finished a replica using AI tools and included a supposed video as proof, though Mochibe noted that no actual video was attached to the message. Mochibe dismissed the threat, stating that replicating his specific game via AI is not feasible, and suggested the email was likely a random scam targeting multiple developers.
This incident highlights growing concerns within the Japanese and international indie scenes regarding AI-driven game cloning. Developers have reported instances where similar titles appeared shortly after gameplay footage was shared publicly.
In response to these risks, some creators are adjusting their strategies. The developer of Project Solaris plans to reduce public development updates, while the team behind Pukey Goddess Shot Trick shifted their upcoming demo from the Steam Next Fest to a private test.
