Takashi Mochibe of Studio At-Home, the developer behind the upcoming SRPG Dragon's Chronicles: Twin Stars of Reginleiv, recently reported receiving an extortion email. The sender threatened to release an AI-generated clone of the game on Steam unless a ransom of 200 USD in Steam items was paid within 24 hours.
The email claimed the perpetrator had already prepared a replica using AI tools and included a supposed video attachment as proof. However, Mochibe noted that no such video was actually attached. He dismissed the message as a likely spam attempt sent to numerous developers, responding that he would only pay if the clone were genuinely superior to his own work.
This incident reflects a growing trend of developers facing threats or intellectual property theft. Other creators, such as the developer of Project Solaris, have begun restricting progress updates to mitigate risks. While some developers remain confident in their unique designs, others have reported instances where simple game concepts shared on social media were copied and published on platforms like Roblox or Steam within days.
These concerns are complicating promotional strategies for indie teams, as social media remains a vital tool for visibility. Dragon's Chronicles: Twin Stars of Reginleiv is currently scheduled for a 2027 release on Steam, with the developer utilizing generative AI for specific assets like character voices and illustrations.
