Visual Arts announced on October 19 that creator Jun Maeda has been diagnosed with pharyngeal cancer. Known for his work on Key titles such as Kanon, AIR, and CLANNAD, Maeda has been a central figure in the company's success. He recently contributed to Summer Pockets and Heaven Burns Red.
Maeda began experiencing throat discomfort in the early spring of 2026, followed by swelling and pain this summer. After medical examinations confirmed the diagnosis, he decided to prioritize palliative care over aggressive treatment to conserve his strength for ongoing creative projects.
Regarding Heaven Burns Red, Maeda has completed writing and music production for the first part of the sixth chapter and finished the main story segments leading to its conclusion. However, he may be unable to work on additional scenarios or music due to his condition.
Maeda intends to finalize planned music projects immediately to share them with fans via YouTube, rather than pursuing a long-term release schedule. Currently hospitalized, he remains dedicated to his craft and has requested that fans support his desire to continue creating until the end.
