Square Enix has issued an official notice regarding a surge in unauthorized login attempts detected within the MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV. The developer is urging its player base to update their account credentials, specifically advising against the use of static or easily guessable email and password combinations.
The company attributes these security concerns to data breaches occurring on external websites. While Japan has seen over 20 major corporations and platforms, including Burger King and the booking service skyticket, suffer from illegal access since October, Square Enix has not specified which particular breach is responsible for the current situation.
To mitigate risks, Square Enix is actively restricting access to accounts suspected of being compromised. Affected users will receive an email notification containing instructions on how to reset their passwords and regain account access. The publisher further stated that it may mandate a universal password reset for all accounts if the security situation continues to escalate.
