A recent event at the Almería Cathedral gathered 400 attendees to commemorate the historic union of Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon. This reenactment highlights the clandestine nature of the original ceremony, which occurred 557 years ago despite significant opposition.

To bypass the disapproval of King Henry IV, Ferdinand traveled through Castile in disguise, posing as a muleteer to avoid detection. This secrecy was essential to ensure the alliance proceeded without interference from those who opposed the marriage.

The couple faced a major obstacle due to their status as second cousins, requiring papal permission to marry. Because the necessary authorization was delayed, they utilized a forged papal bull, falsely attributed to the late Pope Pius II, to validate their union.

The document remains preserved in the General Archive of Simancas, with its fraudulent nature now confirmed. Pope Sixtus IV did not officially authorize the marriage until late 1471, two years after the couple had already wed.
