Red Barrels co-founder Philippe Morin recently discussed the challenging six-year development cycle required to bring The Outlast Trials to early access. Morin described the process as a significant time investment that necessitated a large number of prototypes to refine the core experience.

The development team initially struggled with balancing systemic elements and random generation in pursuit of infinite replayability. Morin explained that the studio eventually pivoted away from these complex features to ensure the title maintained the distinct atmosphere and feel of the Outlast franchise.

Although a build appeared ready for release after four years, internal playtests yielded poor results. These findings forced the developers to return to the drawing board, delaying the project to better align the gameplay with player expectations for the series.

The game has since evolved into a live service title, though it faces mixed reception regarding its implementation of AI-generated imagery. Following the success of Trials, the studio has reportedly shifted its focus, placing the development of Outlast 3 on the backburner.
