On Saturday, October 17, several specialized retailers located on Boulevard Voltaire in Paris were looted during civil unrest. According to Le Parisien, establishments including Manga Story, Hobby One Repar, and Sat Elite were vandalized by groups of hooded individuals who stole merchandise from the premises.
The impact on these businesses is severe. Laurent, a partner at Manga Story, stated that his involvement in the store has ended after decades of operation. Sat Elite reported financial losses estimated between 300,000 and 500,000 euros. Additionally, the upcoming opening of MVP Store was derailed, with over two years of collected inventory, including high-value Pokémon and sports cards, reportedly stolen.
Store owners face significant challenges regarding insurance claims for unique, high-value items. Laurent noted that he will not reopen his business at the current location. Beyond the financial devastation, owners expressed concern for their employees and the loss of what many customers considered a community hub for gaming and manga enthusiasts.
Local authorities have announced an emergency team to assist merchants with administrative tasks and insurance processes. Meanwhile, community members have initiated a crowdfunding campaign for Sat Elite, which had raised 3,175 euros at the time of reporting. While these efforts provide some support, the future of these specialized shops remains uncertain.
