The paleontological community has expressed significant dissatisfaction with how dinosaurs are portrayed in video games. A recent study suggests that these representations are frequently inaccurate, poor, and occasionally sexualized, failing to reflect scientific understanding.
Historically, games have consistently framed dinosaurs as monsters intended for destruction. This trend began as early as 1982 with 3D Monster Maze and continued through titles like Tomb Raider, Turok, and Dino Crisis, where the creatures serve primarily as enemies to be annihilated.
According to the study, games often reduce these animals to violent obstacles or mere trophies to be collected and sold. While management games and niche simulators like 2017's Saurian have begun to incorporate expert advice for more accurate portrayals, the industry largely misses the opportunity to use these creatures as educational tools regarding the history of life.
Although the study is criticized for being overly demanding and focusing on past errors, experts argue that games could effectively educate the public on complex concepts. However, developers face commercial challenges when attempting to move away from established, action-oriented tropes, leaving educational potential mostly to niche titles like Dinosaur Fossil Hunter.
