Key information

Saber Interactive has released Hellraiser: Revival, a new title based on Clive Barker's franchise that focuses on the Cenobites. Narrative director Antony De Fault revealed that the development team set an unofficial goal to have the game banned, unrated, or restricted in at least one territory as a measure of their success in capturing the series' dark essence.

The game incorporates extreme gore, aggressive sexual acts, self-mutilation, and full-frontal nudity. De Fault explained that the team wanted players to actively participate in taboo acts rather than just observing them. To achieve this, they utilized a first-person perspective to make traditional survival horror mechanics feel more sensual or unpleasant.

The developers successfully reached their goal when the Indonesia Game Rating System issued a Refused Classification, banning the game's sale in that country. Despite this, the team exercised some restraint; they modified a scene involving a character performing a sexual act to avoid showing explicit genitalia, which De Fault noted would have likely resulted in widespread market exclusion.
