While the Super Mario series is generally known for its fantastical elements like fire-throwing flowers and anthropomorphic turtles, Super Mario Sunshine stands out for a specific, realistic detail. Released 24 years ago, this title remains the only entry where Mario can drown while hanging from a ledge near a waterfall.
In other entries like Super Mario Galaxy or Super Mario Odyssey, the character's air meter only depletes while actively swimming or diving. Because hanging from a ledge is not classified as a swimming action in those games, the character faces no risk of drowning in such positions.
Super Mario Sunshine differentiates itself by linking the air meter to the environment rather than just swimming status. If water continuously hits Mario while he hangs from a ledge, his air meter depletes, causing him to flash red as he struggles to breathe.
Despite this realistic danger, the developers implemented a stamina limit for hanging. Mario can only hold onto a ledge for 20 seconds before automatically letting go, which prevents him from remaining in the waterfall's path indefinitely and ultimately drowning.
