Key information
The Game Awards has officially ended the era of American dominance within its voting jury. For the 2026 ceremony, the number of U.S. media outlets on the jury has dropped to 17, marking a significant decline from previous years. This shift places the United States on equal footing with the United Kingdom, which also holds 17 seats.
The reduction in American representation is attributed to a mass exodus of mainstream, tech, and lifestyle publications, including Wired, The Atlantic, and Rolling Stone. While the exact cause remains unclear, it may reflect broader challenges in the current media climate or a strategic decision by the awards organizers.
The jury is becoming increasingly international, with Brazil emerging as a major voting power with 14 outlets. Latin American representation now accounts for approximately 21% of the total jury. Meanwhile, mainland Europe has consolidated its influence, now rivaling the English-language voting bloc, which includes Australia, Canada, the U.K., and the U.S.
Despite these changes, the upcoming 2026 awards include Grand Theft Auto 6, which remains a favorite for Game of the Year. While the jury has increasingly favored international titles over American-made blockbusters in recent years, the global nature of modern game development complicates the impact of these voting shifts on future winners.
