The Outlast horror series, developed by Red Barrels, is recognized for its intense depictions of gore and violence. Co-founder Phillipe Morin recently shared that the studio's commitment to extreme horror has occasionally caused traumatic reactions among those involved in the development process.

Morin recalled a specific playtest session where an individual became so overwhelmed by the content that they fled the studio to cry outside. This person reportedly never returned to the facility following the incident.

To mitigate such issues, Red Barrels implements a rigorous recruitment process. Candidates are explicitly warned about the graphic nature of the content and the candid discussions required to produce it, as Morin notes that such conversations might trigger HR interventions in other professional environments.

Despite these warnings, some employees still struggle with the material. Morin cited an instance where a new hire resigned after four days due to discomfort with religious themes, likely related to the cult-focused narrative of Outlast 2. Nevertheless, the series remains commercially successful, with 60 million players since 2013, suggesting the studio will maintain its uncompromising approach.
