Rockstar Games has detailed a new mechanic for Grand Theft Auto VI involving its dual protagonists, Jason and Lucia. Players can switch control between the two characters at any time, a feature that extends to vehicle travel to deepen their romantic relationship and gameplay dynamics.
Development director Rob Nelson confirmed that when both characters are in a vehicle, players can choose to control the passenger. In this state, the AI-controlled character will take over driving duties to transport the player to their destination.
According to Nelson, the AI driver will operate the vehicle at high speeds. He noted that there are no penalties or negative consequences for allowing the companion character to handle the driving, ensuring a smooth experience for players who prefer not to be at the wheel.
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The open-world title is set in Vice City and is described by Rockstar as the most immersive evolution of the series to date.
