Released in 1998 for the original PlayStation, Echo Night represents a distinct departure from FromSoftware’s modern reputation for challenging action RPGs. Directed by Toshifumi Nabeshima, this ghost story trades combat for a melancholic exploration of an abandoned cruise ship, the Orpheus.

The game rejects traditional survival horror tropes like resource scarcity and violence. Instead, players navigate dark environments using light as their primary defense. Progression relies on empathy, as players solve riddles and complete tasks to grant peace to trapped spirits, collecting Astral Pieces as they resolve individual tragedies.

The series expanded with the 1999 Japan-exclusive sequel, Echo Night 2: Lord of Nightmares, and the 2004 title Echo Night: Beyond. While critics at the time criticized Beyond for its slow pace and oxygen mechanics, the franchise remains a cult favorite for its focus on emotional closure.

Echo Night serves as a spiritual precursor to FromSoftware’s later work. Its emphasis on fragmented, environmental storytelling and piecing together forgotten histories mirrors the design philosophy found in titles like Dark Souls and Elden Ring, prioritizing compassion over combat.
