Announced at Gamescom 2014, Wild was envisioned as an ambitious PlayStation exclusive from Michel Ancel and his Wild Sheep Studio. The project aimed to redefine open-world gaming with a massive map spanning nearly 10 million square kilometers, promising a nature-focused experience that captivated Sony and the public.

Gameplay demonstrations showcased unique mechanics, including a dynamic weather and seasonal system alongside the ability to control various creatures. Players could utilize the strength of a bear for combat or the stealth of a rabbit to avoid detection, with additional plans for online multiplayer functionality.

Despite initial excitement, the project faced significant development hurdles. Ancel noted that while a playable version existed in 2018, adapting the title for PS5 slowed production. Internal shifts at Sony and complex contractual entanglements involving Ubisoft ultimately hindered the game's progress.

Following Ancel's 2020 departure from the industry, the project's status remained obscure. In December 2024, Ancel confirmed that the game was cancelled shortly after he left, citing that he could no longer defend the title amidst controversies involving project leadership.
