Released as a PlayStation 3 launch title, Mobile Suit Gundam: Target in Sight was localized as Gundam: Crossfire in Western markets. Unlike previous entries, it launched nearly simultaneously with the Japanese version, receiving significant promotion. Despite this, the game was met with harsh criticism, earning a 33 score on Metacritic.
Reviewers criticized the game for its primitive gameplay and outdated mechanics. IGN awarded it 32 points, while GameSpot gave it 39, specifically citing an extremely low frame rate that made the experience feel like a slideshow. Critics noted a lack of online multiplayer, which was a standard expectation for Western shooters at the time.
Ollie Barder, a subculture journalist and game creator, noted that the game suffered from a broader bias against Japanese titles during the transition to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 era. Additionally, the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime was not widely accessible in the West, where newer series like Gundam Wing were more popular, leaving the game's focus on the One Year War poorly understood.
The negative reception of Gundam: Crossfire created a lasting stigma, causing Bandai Namco to become cautious about releasing future Gundam titles in the West. While Barder acknowledges the game's technical flaws, he remains optimistic about the franchise's future, noting that newer titles like Mobile Suit Gundam Extreme VS. Maxiboost ON have received high praise from Western audiences.
