Polygon recently published a list ranking eight Nintendo Switch games that failed to meet player expectations. The publication notes that these titles, ranging from mild letdowns to significant disappointments, often suffered from a wide gap between their initial promise and the final product, sometimes failing to justify their retail costs.
Several titles were criticized for lacking content or depth at launch. For instance, Mario Golf: Super Rush (2021) was described as thinner than its Game Boy Color predecessor, while Nintendo Switch Sports (2022) was labeled an overpriced demo. Similarly, Mario Strikers: Battle League (2022) faced criticism for its thin single-player content, and 1-2-Switch was faulted for being sold as a full-priced title rather than a pack-in.
Other games struggled with design choices or technical limitations. Princess Peach: Showtime! (2024) was deemed shallow and short, while the HD remake of Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz (2019) drew ire for removing most original minigames. Endless Ocean Luminous (2024) was criticized for turning a relaxing series into a grindy experience, and the sequel to Golf Story was noted for having unevenly developed sports activities.
These assessments highlight how community and critical reception often centered on missing features, high price tags, or a lack of meaningful gameplay depth compared to previous series entries or expectations.
