Developer Koya Matsuo has introduced "Tanken Infinity Ride," a unique project that combines roguelike mechanics with indoor cycling. By connecting a smart trainer to a web-based game, the developer transformed the passive experience of his previous "Tanken Infinity" project into an active fitness challenge where pedaling speed dictates in-game movement.
The game utilizes physics calculations for air resistance, gradient, and weight to translate cycling power into movement. Each grid square represents 4 meters, and players must maintain specific cadence thresholds to succeed. Combat encounters increase trainer resistance based on the enemy's weight, requiring players to pedal faster to land attacks or dodge incoming damage.
The experience features a pseudo-3D perspective, allowing players to view the dungeon from a first-person or third-person viewpoint. The game also integrates a dynamic music system where the pedaling cadence directly controls the tempo of the background score, which includes styles like organ and EDM.
Tanken Infinity Ride is available for free via GitHub Pages and supports Web Bluetooth for smart trainers. While high-end equipment is supported, the developer notes that compatible spin bikes are available at lower price points. The project provides a functional interval training experience by giving players a concrete reason to maintain their pedaling intensity.
