Key information

The United Wizards of the Coast Union (UWOTC-CWA) recently announced that Wizards of the Coast (WoTC) has refused to voluntarily recognize the D&D and Studio X union units. The organization stated it intends to proceed with a formal election to pursue its goals of improved workplace wellness, transparency, and collaboration.

This development follows a previous attempt by the Magic: The Gathering Arena team to unionize in June. During that process, WoTC declined to provide formal recognition and reportedly sent physical letters and daily emails to staff, suggesting that existing benefits could be subject to negotiation if a union were established.

In a statement, the company clarified its stance, asserting that it prefers to work directly with employees rather than through unions. While the company stated it is not neutral regarding unionization, it affirmed that it will respect the final outcome of the upcoming employee election.

The union is seeking fair wages, job security, and protections regarding remote work, AI usage, and creative ownership. With the D&D and digital gaming divisions generating $568 million in operating profit over the last six months, the union aims to leverage the financial success of these departments during negotiations.
