Key information
Lord of the Rings Online players often note a significant gap in the game's expansion history between the conclusion of Rohan and the arrival of Mordor. Despite the absence of a formal expansion release, the period from 2014 to 2017 saw the introduction of a massive amount of content covering the country of Gondor.
This era was marked by internal instability at developer Turbine, including a financial disappointment following the 2014 Helm’s Deep release, leadership changes, and a reduction in server counts from 29 to 10. Amidst rumors of the game entering maintenance mode and a cessation of raid development, the studio shifted its strategy toward continuous storytelling rather than traditional expansion packs.
Despite these challenges, content was delivered through six major updates. These additions introduced the essence system, the Beorning class, and level cap increases to 100 and eventually 105. Gameplay mechanics evolved through the imbuement of legendary items and the implementation of epic battles, though the latter system faced criticism from the player base.
By late 2016, Turbine transitioned the game to Standing Stone Games. While the content released during this period effectively functioned as a full-scale expansion—offering new regions, housing, and story progression—the tumultuous corporate environment made a standard expansion release impossible. Ultimately, this period of development prevented the game from stagnating during a time of significant uncertainty.
